About my golden Mondial

In 2016 I purchased a Ferrari Mondial, which upon closer inspection appeared to be more special than thought !

Rebuilding part 2

Many things have been mounted on the car: bumpers and lights, grills, windows, badges, mouldings and much more! Everything is done with original parts both used and new. This car will become a reference for the Mondial type!

Rebuilding the car

A lot is going on currently. I refitted the front and rear bumpers, rear lights, blinkers, cleaned up and tested the horns, refitted the side windows and the rear window and re-attached some emblems. It looks really awesome!

Paintjob done!

We can say that the paintjob has taken some time, but fortunately it is because the painter wanted to achieve perfectionism. The chassis and pannels are quite simply very stunning and the paint looks even better than imagined. Right now, the final touch is being done: everything is getting polished so that there are no particles to see under the varnish. Next thing to do is to reattach all mouldings around the windows and doors.

…is in progress. The doors and hoods have been painted already and they are looking awesome!

Primer done – ready 4 paint !

My Golden Mondial Posted on Thu, September 14, 2017 13:41:09

The car has been put in primer and will be repainted this Friday. Everything went very smoothly and the job these guys did is just amazing so far !

I also got in touch with the last Suisse owner. He was the second owner of the car and purchased the car while it was still in gold. Some time later, he sold it to a body shop in Lausanne where it was painted in red.

Almost ready for primer

The doors have been removed and the last things are being sanded. Some last rust spots are being removed. After this, the shop will take off the front wings and look at the chassis that runs over the wheel arches to see if that needs extra work.

Preparing the car for the paintjob

A number of corroded spots have been cut out and new steel has been welded in. So far, no big surprises and the body is in overall very good condition. Primer has been put on the car and the guys at the bodyshop are doing a great job preparing the car for the paint job which will happen in a couple of weeks.

6 layers of paint have been removed, that means that the car will weigh at least 12 kg lighter than before!

Sanding the car

My Golden Mondial Posted on Wed, August 30, 2017 15:26:46

The car has been sanded to the bare metal by the bodyshop and we came to some early conclusions:

– There are some small rusty spots on the car, but all in all the body is in very healthy condition! The bottom of the doors were in completely rust-free condition,
something that is absolutely rare for this model! Even the door sills
were close to perfect with only minor work.
– Sanding the car back through time, we found out that the original color was indeed light gold. Then, it has been repainted in red several times and there were at least 5 layers of red on the car !
– It has sustained some damage on the right side a number of years ago and the RH door was replaced. A lot of filler was used on the right side of the car, all removed and the panels were beaten until they fit again, requiring much less filler to be re-applied.

In short, it was the right choice to have it restored to the original specs because it is after all a very healthy Mondial !
